Mentoring for Engagement at All Levels
Session: Thursday, December 1, 2016

Offering your members a mentoring program can pave the way to feed their passions while empowering the community to share experiences across generations. When you enable mentorship within your membership, you set the tone for a new generation of educated, informed, constituents who are more likely to remain engaged with you in the future. Review what is needed to design and structure a successful mentorship program and how to avoid common mistakes. Explore reverse mentoring, identify mentors, how to train both the mentor and the mentee, how to fund the program, and communication strategies to spread the word about the program.

Learning Objectives:

  • Analyze the reasons why so many mentoring programs fail to create lasting mentoring relationships and a long term membership benefit.
  • Develop goals for a mentoring program at your  association, to ensure the program meets the needs of your specific membership.
  • Implement a successful model for a mentoring program at your association which will create lasting relationships and a sustainable model for a new member benefit.

Debbie Trueblood is currently the Executive Director of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association. She has formerly served as Executive Director for Illinois HomeCare Council (Interim), International Association of Rehabilitation Professionals, Academy for Eating Disorders, Society of Adolescent Health and Medicine, and Society of Vertebrate Paleontology through two association management companies, The Center for Association Growth and Sherwood Group. She has been a lobbyist for Illinois HomeCare Council, National Private Duty Association, and American Osteopathic Association. She has a certificate in nonprofit management and is a Certified Association Executive. She has a Masters in Social Work from University of Illinois at Chicago and serves as a Trustee for her alma mater, MacMurray College.
